CARL BRADY is an award-winning, veteran broadcaster who is making the transition from radio to TV. Carl’s first radio broadcast came as a college student in 1987 on WVSU, the campus radio station at Samford University.
Carl was born and raised in Gadsden, Alabama where he graduated from Emma Sansom High School in 1986 as a 4-year baseball letterman, member of the Rebel Americans (the award-winning school choir), member of the National Honor Society and President of the Student Council. After graduation, a combination of baseball and academic scholarships landed Carl at Samford University where he studied computer science and broadcasting for two years before leaving school to work full-time in the broadcasting industry.
As has been mentioned, Carl started his radio career on WVSU-FM at Samford University. From there, he moved to WBYE-AM in Calera, Alabama. “1370, All American Country”, laughs Carl, “WBYE was my first paying radio job. It was a tiny station in the middle of nowhere, but I was working on the radio and I was getting paid! I was in hog heaven!” When WBYE was forced to go dark for an extended period of time due to a blown transmitter, Carl made the move to WHOD-AM/FM in Jackson, Alabama and later moved back closer to home with jobs at WQSB-FM in Albertville, Alabama and WRHY-FM in Centre, Alabama.
After nearly a decade at WRHY, Carl landed the important afternoon drive slot at WGMZ-FM, Classic Hits Z93.1, in Gadsden in 2001 and was soon added to the WAAX-AM, News/Talk 570AM, line-up as a news anchor. In October of 2002, Carl was chosen to succeed the popular J. Holland as the host of the morning talk show on WAAX. The Big WAAX Morning Edition with Carl Brady drew some of the highest Arbitron ratings in the News/Talk era of WAAX radio…including a couple of #1 ratings.
Carl is also a well known, and busy, sports announcer. Carl was the radio “voice” of the Etowah Blue Devil football team for the past three seasons and just finished his first season as the play-by-play announcer for the Jacksonville State Softball and Baseball teams on the JSU Sports Network. He has also spent the last few years as JSU’s Public Address announcer for football at Paul Snow Stadium and for basketball at Pete Mathews Coliseum. Carl spent many years as the P.A. announcer for basketball at Cherokee County High School in Centre as well. Earlier this year, Carl was presented with the Alabama Broadcasters Association’s inaugural ABBY AWARD as the Small Market Radio Sportscaster of the Year at a banquet held at the Ross Bridge Resort in Birmingham. Now that he has made the move to TV, you will still be able to enjoy Carl’s sports announcing this fall with HSTV and his continuing work with Jacksonville State sports.
While DAYBREAK ALABAMA is Carl’s first foray into the world of live TV, he also works as a voice-over artist for radio stations, TV stations and production companies around the U.S.
Carl currently makes his home in Gadsden with a dog and three cats and is proud to be living in his Granny and Grandpa’s old home where he spent many wonderful hours as a child. In his spare time, Carl enjoys music (he used to be quite the musician), writing (look for a new blog coming soon) and working with computers (can’t live without them).
Look for Carl weekdays on East Alabama Today! |
