The most recognized holiday season parade in America is the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City.
And one East Alabama trumpet player will be there marching is a special band! Rachel Elkins, a junior at Southside High School in Etowah County is one of only fifteen Alabama students chosen to march in this year’s Macy’s Great American Marching Band. It is made up of about 300 high school band members from across the country. Elkins says that she was thrilled to receive the unexpected honor and that she looks forward to a busy – but fun – week in New York. Elkins received her invitation to audition after participating in other honor band programs and catching the attention of Auburn University Director of Bands – Richard Good. He also serves as the director for the Macy’s Great American Marching Band. Southside High School Band Director Matt Weaver says that the school is very happy for Rachel. Each student pays a fee of more than 15-hundred dollars to participate and then they must arrange for their own travel to the Big Apple; plus the extra cost of having a parent make the trip too. If you would like to help Rachel’s family offset the cost of this once-in-a-lifetime trip, an account has been opened with WinSouth Credit Unions and any donation are greatly appreciated.
