Federal prosecutors say a Childersburg city councilwoman has pleaded guilty to bank fraud and money laundering. U.S. Attorney's officials said Wednesday that Bonny Jean Carter pleaded guilty to embezzling nearly $1 million from SouthFirst Bank. Investigators say 61-year-old Carter worked as an account clerk at the bank and embezzled the money between October 2002 and March 2013. They claim that Carter also issued debit transactions from the bank's expense accounts to pay some of her personal debts. Carter is ordered to pay more than $951,700 in restitution to the bank. She’s scheduled for sentencing on March 11.
