Jefferson County Jail
The Jefferson County Jail in Bessemer is resuming normal operations after being closed for four years because of the county's financial problems. Sheriff Mike Hale says improved funding from the Jefferson County Commission allowed the reopening. The jail closed in October 2009 and all prisoners moved to the county jail in Birmingham. The sheriff says that resulted in overcrowded conditions and a dangerous atmosphere in Birmingham. The jail in Bessemer was only used to house inmates on days they had court cases at the courthouse in Bessemer. The reopening follows Jefferson County emerging from bankruptcy December 7th.
