Groundbreaking Ceremony At Anniston

The ceremony symbolizes the start of a project to complete the stretch of the Eastern Bypass known as Veterans Memorial Parkway. The groundbreaking ceremony originated at the north end of the new Parkway near its eventual intersection with U.S. Highway 431. The seven-mile long Parkway has been under construction for more than 10 years at a total cost of about $150 million. The final paving and complete intersection will be finished by McCartney Construction Company. The construction will be continued by a $12.2 million contract awarded by the Alabama Department of Transportation. The Eastern Bypass begins in Oxford at Interstate 20, and travels through southeast Anniston through the former Fort McClellan property to U.S. 431 in north Anniston. Alabama Department of Transportation officials say the final juncture of the new Veterans Memorial Parkway will be developed by summer of 2015.
