Heating devices in area homes are working overtime to keep residents warm and protected during the record cold. Alabama Power reports the freezing temperatures caused a new winter peak for power use for Alabama Power customers. Preliminary figures show that late Tuesday morning, the system surpassed the previous winter peak set on January 12, 2011. It caused many local outages across the state. The peak outage impact was around 7:30 Tuesday morning. The Anniston and Gadsden areas suffered a power outage that affected 1,300 homes. The outage caused the regions of Mobile, Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, Dothan, Eufala, Anniston, and Gadsden to go without power. 27,000 customers were without service. By late morning, nearly two-thirds of those had been restored.
