DOJ Report

The state began working to improve conditions at Julia Tutwiler Prison for woman even before a federal investigation found evidence of inmates being sexually abused. That’s the word today from the department of corrections and Governor’s Robert Bentley’s office. A U.S. Justice Department report released last week stated they found proof of sexual abuse of prisoner by orison staff. The report also says the abuse may have been underreported for nearly two decades. The DOJ plans to expand its probe to medical and mental health care for inmates as well. Corrections Commissioner Kim Thomas calls the findings off-base and says officials have been working to address problems at the facility for months. The all-women prison in Wetumpka made last year’s list of “America’s 10 Worst Prisons.”
