A hometown team takes home the gold from the 21st annual Elementary Science Olympiad at Jacksonville High School. Students from Kitty Stone Elementary are the 2014 Science Olympiad winners. More than 6,000 students from across east-central Alabama participate in the annual tournament. The science teams are made up of as many as 24 upper elementary students. They compete in a series of individual and team events in preparation of the tournament. At the end of the day, team trophies are awarded to the top six schools based on a total compilation of points during the day-long Olympiad. The competition aims to test students on their creative and cooperative skills in the area of science.
