A bill intended to protect Alabama communities from wind energy developers has passed the Senate and will now move to the House. SB12 which is known as the Alabama Wind Conversion Systems Act of 2014 is sponsored by District 10 Senator Phil Williams. The bill was introduced as a reaction to announced plans by Pioneer Green Energy to build a wind farms along a ridge of Lookout Mountain in Etowah and Cherokee Counties. The bill would require permits from the Alabama Department of Environmental Management for such projects and would direct that department to adopt rules and regulations concerning wind farm projects. It would also require that developers get approval from the local governing body and have a reclamation bond in place in the event that the wind farm is ever abandoned.
