State Education Budget

Governor Bentley is refusing to sign the new education budget unless it includes a two percent pay raise for teachers and public education employees. The governor says that he will send the budget back to lawmakers if they do not approve the raise. He also wants to include full funding for the teacher's insurance program. The Senate Budget Chairman says the state simply cannot afford the $74 million cost of a two percent cost of living raise. Lawmakers could override a veto by the governor if a majority of members in both chambers agree.
