Colonel Ola Lee Mize Passes Away

In our top story, a Congressional Medal of Honor recipient from Gadsden has passed away. 82-year old retired Army Colonel Ola Lee Mize died this afternoon after an extended illness. Col. Mize was a decorated veteran whose military career spanned more than three decades – including service in the Korean War and in Vietnam. Mize was originally from Marshall County, but moved to Gadsden with his family when he was just 6 months old. He joined the Army in 1950 and was assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division. Mize earned his Medal of Honor in June of 1953 during the Korean War when his unit came under heavy attack at Outpost Harry. Mize organized defensive positions, rescued wounded soldiers and engaged the enemy until reinforcements arrived the following day. After Korea, Mize joined the Special Forces and served three tours of duty in Vietnam. He retired as a Colonel in 1981.
