Former Senator’s Upcoming Trial

A judge in Fort Payne has blocked a former state senator's attempt to have the state attorney general testify at his upcoming trial. Lowell Barron of Fyffe is scheduled to go on trial next month for charges of violating the state's ethics and campaign finance laws. Barron's lawyers had issued a subpoena for Attorney General Luther Strange to testify. They wanted to question strange about how he used his campaign funds. However, DeKalb County Circuit Judge Randall Cole issued an order today that conditionally stops that subpoena. Cole says there is no need in forcing the state prosecutor to testify if the evidence can be gathered from other sources. He says the subpoena will remain blocked as long as state prosecutors allow campaign finance reports from the attorney general's office as evidence. The judge still has to determine if those records are relevant to Barron's case.
