House Bill 145 Goes to the Alabama Senate
Representative Patricia Todd of the Alabama House of Representatives gets a bill passed through the House that will require payday lenders to use a statewide database. House Bill 145 will provide borrowers with greater protection against fraud and abuse by payday lenders. The bill amends part of the Code of Alabama that is related to outstanding debt transactions, licenses, and customer information. Rules establishing requirements in order to assure complete and accurate disclosures for borrowers by lenders will also be enforced. Under the existing law, payday lenders may lend only $500 to a single borrower, and no borrower may have greater than $500 worth of payday loans at any one time.
