A Senate committee has approved a $1.84 billion General Fund budget for non-education agencies. That's $15 million more than the House-approved version. The committee today also approved a bill backed by the governor that would provide a 4-percent cost-of-living raise to state employees. That bill depends on the availability of extra state revenue. Senate budget committee Chairman, Arthur Orr of Decatur says since that extra money is uncertain, he will ask the Senate to amend the bill to add a guaranteed bonus of $400. The one-time bonus would be paid to all state employees in the new fiscal year beginning October 1.
