Changes at Tutwiler

Alabama wants to spend about $500,000 to hire a consulting firm to help make changes at Julia Tutwiler prison for women in Wetumpka. The facility was thrust into the national spotlight over accusations of sexual harassment and abuse. A proposal before a legislative committee would allow the state to pay Washington D.C. -based "The Moss Group" up to $499,000 over the next 18 months. The group has been hired to bring Tutwiler into compliance with the federal Prison Rape Elimination Act. They will also improve safety at the prison and other state facilities.
