2014 Special Olympics in Oxford

Today is a special day for some very gifted athletes in our region. The 2014 Special Olympics for Calhoun and Cleburne Counties was held at Oxford High School. 169 athletes from seven local school systems competed in today’s games which included the 50 Meter Race, the 100 Meter Race, the Long Jump, the Softball Throw, the Shot Put Throw, and even a 25 Meter Wheelchair Race. Athletes with intellectual disabilities ranging in ages from 8-years-old to 21-years-old trained for at least eight weeks to compete in the events. The Special Olympics Program is coordinated by The Arc of Calhoun and Cleburne Counties and is a year-round training and physical fitness program.
