40th Anniversary 1974 Super Tornado Outbreak in Alabama
Today marks the fortieth anniversary of what has become known as the Super Outbreak of tornadoes that devastated Alabama April 3rd and 4th of 1974. During the late afternoon and evening hours of April 3rd that year at least eight tornadoes, including four extremely intense and long-lived storms caused the death of eighty-six victims, injured 949, and caused damages exceeding $50 million. Sixteen counties in the northern part of the state were hit the hardest. Those storms from 40 years ago, rank as the third worst tornado outbreak in Alabama history.
