Fourth graders from all over Calhoun County get an opportunity to soak up the sun and enjoy up close the local animal and plant life at the annual Earth Day Field Trip at the Cane Creek Community Gardens. This visit to the 17 acre site has been going on for more than 16 years and is a partnership between volunteers, business partners, the Calhoun County Commission, the Calhoun County Extension Office, and the Calhoun County Master Gardeners. Event organizers say that this is an opportunity for kids who have never been outdoors and had the opportunity to closely interact with nature to touch a snake, a cow, and even a bird. The annual Earth Day Field Trip also provides other activities for the fourth graders such as relays, role-playing exercises, and educational activities on electrical safety. Earth Day is actually on April 22nd.
