Gadsden City Schools and Alabama Power have joined forces to encourage eighth grade girls to excel in the fields of math and science. A select group of Litchfield Middle School eighth graders are participating in the I-CAN program this week. These young girls have a high potential for math and science and the goal is to get them interested in the field of engineering. The students were tasked with the mission of using different forms of energy to build a piece of equipment that would make it easier to feed the family dog. They could only use household items to accomplish their goal. According to Alabama Power officials, there is a critical need for more women engineers, who represent less than 20 percent of the work force. They say that with programs like I-CAN Girls in Engineering, the numbers will increase.
