The Pinto Bean Lesson in Saks

Could a food as simple as a tiny pinto bean save a life and change the world? That’s the question more than 50 third graders from Saks Elementary School have been studying for more than a month. The teachers and students participated in a project based learning activity called The Pinto Bean Lesson. The activity combined math, science, and community service to teach the children about more than just basic educational skills. It also taught them about the devastation of hunger. The third graders collected more than 250,000 pinto beans in just five weeks that they are now donating to the Right Place For Housing and Support in Jacksonville. The students will continue the lesson into next year and are well on their way to collecting their goal of one billion pinto beans. The beans already collected will help feed the hungry in our community next week.
