According to a press release from the Anniston Police Department, a review of the 9-1-1 call from the officer- involved shooting in the Blue Mountain community yesterday shows that the person who called 9-1-1 about a man in the street with a gun is the same man shot and killed by responding officers. 9-1-1 received a call from a man who said he was “Frank” and that a man was walking around the area of Net Street and Twine Street with a firearm. Two Anniston police officers arrived on the scene and found Frank Johnston holding a weapon. The officers told Johnston to drop his weapon; he refused, assumed a shooting stance and then aimed the weapon at the officers. Both officers fired shots at Johnston and he was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators later discovered that Johnston’s weapon, shown here from police evidence photos, was an Airsoft type gun designed to look like a real one. Later, investigators found a cell phone inside Johnston’s home that displayed the same number that called 911. The officers involved in the shooting are still going through the administrative process.
