Smith Institute Storm Damage in Etowah County

Residents in the Smith Institute Community of northern Etowah County are in recovery mode as they begin the process of cleaning up after what is believed to be a small tornado hit their area early this morning. Etowah County EMA officials say that the apparent tornado hit just before 1 a.m. in the community that is located near Sardis City. Only a few minor injuries were reported, but the storm left behind numerous downed trees and power lines and dozens of damaged or destroyed homes. Sgt. Lanny Handy of the Etowah County Sheriff’s Office says that the storm appeared to *skip around* as it hit the community. Residents of Smith Institute are not strangers to the angry hand of Mother Nature. This same community was hit by a tornado just 13 months ago. Many of the residents who had severe damage today were still recovering from the damage of the last storm. That storm, in March of last year, was ruled an EF1 tornado. Officials on the scene today say that the damage from today’s storm appears to be much more severe and widespread.
