A routine drug bust takes an unusual turn. According to a press release from the Anniston Police Department, on Sunday, officers arrested Anniston attorney Matthew Merrill in for Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance, Illegal Possession of Prescription Drugs and Public Drunkenness. During the course of the arrest, a plan to commit murder was discovered. A subsequent investigation ensued and evidence to substantiate the murder plot was found. According to Calhoun County Circuit Judge Brian Howell, a Calhoun County grand jury indicted Merrill for allegedly trying to arrange Patrick McCarroll’s murder on Thursday. Merrill’s charges include soliciting another man, Gerald Griffin, to kill McCarroll. Merrill is being held in the Calhoun County jail on $500,000 bond for the solicitation charge. He’s scheduled to be arraigned on July 24th.
