Run for the Wall in Ashville
Today marks a decade that local volunteers have gathered in Ashville, Alabama in support of the annual Run for the Wall motorcycle ride. Run for the Wall is the annual ride that originates in Los Angeles, California and culminates with a huge gathering of veterans and their supporters on Memorial Day in Washington, DC. Every year, the southern route of the ride passes through the area on I-59 – and every year the ride stops in Ashville to gas up the bikes and enjoy free hot dogs and soft drinks provided by local volunteers. Nearly a thousand hot dogs were cooked and served today as more than 400 veterans and ride participants stopped for their lunch break in the Piggly Wiggly parking lot in Ashville. For the riders it was a great opportunity to stretch their legs, fill their bellies and share their stories of why they ride. This is the 26th year for the 25-hundred mile ride. Overall, several thousand participants follow three special routes across the country with plans to all arrive at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall on Friday afternoon.
