Mosquito-borne Virus in Alabama

The state department of Public Health has confirmed the first cast of a mosquito-borne virus in Alabama. Officials say a Huntsville woman got Chikungunya (chik-in-GUHN'-yuh)while traveling to Haiti. They also say the woman was beyond transmission stage when she returned to Alabama. Chikungunya (chik-in-GUHN'-yuh) originated in Africa. According to the The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, cases of the illness have been recorded in all of Alabama's neighboring states, but all of those who became sick had traveled outside the United States. While there are not any known cases where transmission originated from Alabama, two types of mosquitoes known to spread the virus are present in the state. Health officials say the virus causes flu-like symptoms with a high fever and joint pain.
