The Alabama Education Association can no longer collect dues from members through payroll deductions. AEA had a court-approved deadline of Monday to comply with a newly enforced state law, which limits payroll deductions. In order to comply, the organization had to certify to school systems that it wasn't using dues collected through payroll deductions for any political activity. However, the AEA says it wasn't willing to do that because it would have silenced the organization. An AEA spokesperson says they are now working to convert all 95,000 members to bank drafts.
