Student Enrollment Process

Saturday, July 12, 2014

The Alabama Department of Education wants all public schools in the state to start using a new student enrollment process. State schools superintendent Tommy Bice has sent out a standardized enrollment form which makes it clear that a Social Security number or birth certificate is not necessary to enroll a student. Bice sent the forms to school officials after the Southern Poverty Law Center complained about the process. The center said that more than 70 percent of Alabama's school systems were using enrollment practices that violated federal prohibitions against discouraging enrollment of immigrant children.
