The Plan for the construction of the new Kitty Stone Elementary School is still in the design phase. But, according to the Superintendent of Jacksonville City Schools, Dr. Jon Campbell, things are moving along quickly. The new location for the elementary school will be at the corner of James Hopkins Road and George Douthitt Drive across the street from the high school. The new school has a budget of $12.6 million and will contain a state of the art gym and a storm shelter. Campbell says he’s pleased that they will be able to provide students with a safer and more secure building. The storm shelter safe area will have its own handling system and generator in case of power outages. And, another design addition to the architecture is a controlled access area for visitors. Campbell says it’s all in keeping with the design changes suggested by school personnel and administrators. Campbell says they will start clearing the land for the new school as early as later this week, with more preparation during the Fall. The board of education will begin opening bids for construction in November or December and the successful bidder will begin construction at the first of the new year.
