State Crime Rate Drops

The state's crime rate dropped by 4 percent last year. That's according to the annual report from The Alabama Criminal Justice Information Center.It says law enforcement agencies in Alabama reported 173,916 crimes in 2013.

That's down from 181,752 crimes in 2012. The report also shows this is the second consecutive year that the crime rate has decreased. The center reports that property crimes were down five percent, burglaries dropped 11 percent and robberies dropped 6 percent. Homicides were up five percent and crimes involving motor vehicles went up to 9 percent. The report also notes that 24 percent of the crimes were cleared by an arrest or other means. That's the highest crime-resolution rate in the last 5 years.
