Weiss Lake Drowning

A day of boating takes a tragic turn for one Cherokee County family.

According to Deputy Coroner Carl Brown, 70-year-old Jerry Wayne Clowdus of Gaylesville drowned in Weiss Lake this afternoon. Officials say it happened near the Cobia Bridge in Cedar Bluff. According to investigators, Clowdus had gone to get his truck and trailer to remove his boat from the water, when it drifted from the dock with his wife still aboard. They say Clowdus jumped into the water to try and reach the boat, but he never resurfaced. Paramedics pronounced Clowdus dead at the scene about 1:00 p.m. after search and rescue personnel pulled his body from the lake.
