City of Anniston Considers Raise on Gasoline Tax

The city of Anniston is considering bringing back a tax that was on the books from more than 50 years ago.Anniston City leaders are looking to raise taxes on local gasoline stations to take the burden off of the city for improvements to its streets and roads projects. The City Council is thinking of requiring gasoline retailers to charge a 2 cents-per-gallon-sold tax on city gasoline. City of Anniston Mayor Vaughn Stewart says residents don’t need to think that the proposal is something totally new. Stewart says that other regional municipalities already have it. City Manager Brian Johnson says this decision is due in part to the administrations perspective on ways to generate revenue. Mayor Vaughn Stewart said the council will vote on the tax at their next meeting on Monday.
