Criminal Cyber-Attack At Gadsden Regional Medical Center

Federal authorities are investigating a cyber-attack at 11 state hospitals owned by Tennessee-based Community Health Systems, and Gadsden Regional Medical Center is among those targeted. According to a press release from Gadsden Regional, limited personal identification data belonging to some patients who were seen at physician practices and clinics affiliated with the hospital over the past five years was transferred out of the hospital’s system by hackers. The transferred information did not include any medical information or credit card information, but it did include names, addresses, birthdates, telephone numbers and social security numbers. Officials say the intruder was a foreign-based group out of China that was likely looking for intellectual property. They add that the intruder has since been eradicated and applications have been deployed to protect against future attacks. The hospital will support prosecution of those responsible for this attack.
