Jacksonville State University recognizes disaster readiness with a week of activities and training at Houston Cole Library, this week. It is J-S-U Ready Week. A week where the university’s Emergency Management Department continues its yearly commitment to Community Emergency Response Team training and volunteerism. And, event organizers are hoping to recruit new CERT members and get them trained to be a part of the organization. J-S-U Department of Emergency Management Associate Professor Jane Kushma, says recent disasters show that anyone could be called on to respond in an emergency situation. Kushma says preparing people to serve in emergency response will reduce the demand on the emergency system. J-S-U Ready Week will finish up on Thursday with a READY J-S-U Day and symposium. This year’s theme is a celebration of volunteerism. The symposium’s featured speakers will be from the Community Foundation of Northeast Alabama, Americorps National Civilian Corps, the Calhoun County AmeriCorps, and a representative from J-S-U career services. Also, as part of the symposium, Kushma says they will offer a volunteer reception center training. For more information on CERT Training contact Jacksonville State University at 256-782-5781.
