Man Sent to Death Row Gets New Trial
An Etowah County man sent to death row for the beating death of a child will get a new trial. The Alabama Supreme Court ruled Friday that the capital murder conviction and death sentence of Kevin Towles should be overturned because of improper testimony at his trial. State prosecutors asked the higher court to review the case after an appeals court reached the same conclusion last year. Towles was convicted in 2009 of the beating death of his girlfriend's five-year-old son, Geontae Glass. The testimony in question came from Towles' 15-year-old son who said his father had hit him in the mouth and struck him with an electric fan. The Supreme Court said the testimony created undue prejudice against Towles during the trial.
