Detour Routes for AL HWY 21 in Talladega County
The Alabama Department of Transportation will begin repairs to a sinkhole located on Alabama Highway 21 in Talladega County Tuesday, September 30, beginning at 10 a.m. The sinkhole is located at State Route 21 just off the southbound roadway. It is 2 miles south of Talladega.
Officials say the work will consist of excavating the sinkhole and backfilling with flowable concrete and riprap. The contractor will be hauling excavation and riprap to and from a waste site on the northbound roadside across traffic flow. The southbound traffic will be diverted at milepost 225.5 onto the northbound roadway, where there will be two-way traffic to milepost 224.2, where the southbound traffic will go back to normal flow.
Northbound traffic will be reduced to a single lane at milepost 224.2 and continue to milepost 225.5 where it will resume to normal flow. The project is expected to be completed by October 16. Motorists are requested to consider using alternate routes, adjust arrival and or departure times, observe work zone speed limits and other work zone signs, and use extreme caution in this area.
