In our top story, the board of directors of Regional Medical Center won a temporary restraining order in Calhoun County Circuit Court this afternoon blocking the Anniston City Council from removing RMC’s board chairman from that office. The order, signed by Judge John Thomason, also stops the city from appointing City Manager Brian Johnson to the hospital board until a hearing can be held. RMC’s lawsuit accuses the council of taking “unconstitutional and illegal actions to gain control” of the hospital and its board of directors. The action follows a vote last week by the council to appoint City Manager Brian Johnson to the RMC board, as well as a vote this week by the council to remove RMC Board Chairman Greg Kernion from that board. In the lawsuit, the hospital board accuses the council of taking “heavy handed” actions that are designed to cause conflicts of interest, breaches of confidentiality and compromises in the management of RMC. A hearing on the lawsuit and the temporary restraining order has been set for October 10.
