Federal Lawsuit

Wednesday, October 15, 2014

A federal lawsuit has been filed to try and bring changes to the St. Clair Correctional Facility in Springville. The Montgomery-based Equal Justice Initiative filed the suit today. The group blames six deaths at the state prison in the last 36 months on corruption and poor management. The complaint claims that officers and other prison workers are selling drugs and other contraband to prisoners. It also claims most cell doors don't lock and that prisoners aren't getting proper mental health care because of cutbacks. The St. Clair Correctional Facility holds more than 1,200 men.
