As Breast Cancer Awareness month continues across the East Alabama Community, Quality of Life Health Services held their annual Breast Cancer Awareness Forum today in Gadsden. The theme for today’s event was “Breaking the Chains of Breast Cancer”. The keynote speaker for the forum was 4-year breast cancer survivor Derrick Cameron. Cameron spoke of his battle with breast cancer and about the unique battles he had to fight as a man - with what many consider – a woman’s disease. Breast cancer survivor Regina Jackson was also one of today’s speakers. Jackson was diagnosed with breast cancer in January of this year and spoke about the importance of self exams. Males only account for about one percent of breast cancer cases in the U.S. – but it is important to know that it can happen to men too. More than 400 men die every year due to breast cancer. A great resource to learn more about male breast cancer is the American Cancer Society website – www.cancer.org.
