Etowah County District Attorney Jimmie Harp describing the approximately 4 pounds of imported crystal meth that investigators recently seized in Attalla. Law enforcement officials held a press conference today to talk about the arrests of 24-year old Edgar Jesus Cervantes and 22-year old Zanda Lee Gonzalez of Attalla. Both are charged with drug trafficking after officers found the meth while executing a search warrant on October 14th. Drug Task Force Commander Rob Savage says that 4 pounds of a drug this pure could have been widely distributed. Sheriff Todd Entrekin says that state laws restricting the purchase of precursor chemicals have had a big impact on local meth production, but that meth imports - like this seizure - have increased. Agents have valued the seized meth at more than $150,000 on the streets.
Both Cervantes and Gonzales are being held in the Marshall County Detention Center with bonds set at $250,000 each.
