Ottie Noble's Veterans' Walk

Friday, November 7, 2014

After a failed attempt to re-organize a Veterans Parade in Etowah County this year, one local Vietnam Vet decided to do his own remembrance walk and it has turned into a community-wide endeavor. US Army veteran Ottie Noble of Ivalee recently posted on facebook that he would honor his fellow veterans on Veterans Day by retracing his 1969 walk from the recruiting offices at the Federal Building in Downtown Gadsden to the old bus station two and a half blocks away on Terminal Street.Once Noble posted his plan online, word spread around the internet and other veterans and supporters pledged to join him in his walk. Noble says that dozens – maybe even hundreds - of Etowah County men made that same walk during the Vietnam years, but Tuesday's walk will be in honor of all veterans from all eras. Noble says that he will arrive at the Federal Building in Downtown Gadsden at 7am – just like he did on August 15, 1969 – and at 7:30 he'll make the walk to where the bus station used to be located on Terminal Street behind the old Sears building. All veterans and supporters are encouraged to join the walk.
