JSU Moves Up to No. 3 In the FCS Polls

Jacksonville State racked up their eighth consecutive win Saturday which puts them in position to clinch the league championship this week.

The Gamecocks knocked off Eastern Kentucky 20-6 to move to 8-1 on the year. The victory was a big one for the defense which just two field goals to an Eastern Kentucky offense averaging 34 points per game. The defense has not given up a touchdown in the last 13 straight quarters.

The Gamecocks return home to face Eastern Illinois this weekend. The Panthers are 5-5 overall, but they are 5-1 in the OVC with a shot at a league title. JSU is also hunting for a crown this week. A win at home Saturday and the title is theirs. As if playing for the OVC title wasn’t enough, there’s also a small hint of revenge working in JSU’s favor. Last season the Panthers drummed the Gamecocks 52-14. The guys won’t say that revenge is their sole motivation, but it’s clear last year’s loss still stings.

Folo Johnson racked up 14 tackles against Eastern Kentucky on Saturday and was named both the OVC and the National Defensive Player of the Week. Meanwhile the team moved up to No. 3 in the national FCS polls released today.
