The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency will have extra officers on the state’s highways through the New Year. The extended holiday travel period began at 12:01 this morning and will end at midnight on January 2. During last year’s holiday travel period, Troopers investigated 17 traffic fatalities and five of those involved alcohol. In an effort to cut the number of traffic deaths this year, state officers will be patrolling in marked and unmarked cars. Troopers will also be available to assist motorists with highway emergencies. They can be reached by dialing " *HP " from any cell phone.
