Have you ever thought about the Southern traditions wrapped up in how we treat our dead? Well, the Public Library of Anniston Calhoun County gave its community the chance to hear about funeral traditions and customs of the nineteenth century South. The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute presented Sitting Up With The Dead by Dr. Skip Campbell of the College of Continuing Studies at the University of Alabama. Campbell explored the interesting reasons why people died and how families coped with the sorrow and the grief that accompanies death. He also shared why we have some of the superstitions we practice today.Campbell teaches an undergraduate course in cemeteries and local history.
