Smoking Ordinance Goes Into Effect Sunday
The Gadsden smoking ordinance which begins on Sunday, prohibits smoking in all enclosed public areas in the city—including restaurants and bars. It also bans smoking within 20 feet of public entrances to buildings. According to reports, Don Shankles, owner of the Bingo Center, says his customers are heartbroken because many enjoy smoking during the games. Shankles is concerned this will reduce the bingo revenue that goes to charities. Advocates say it will protect the public from secondhand smoke. The city council passed the ordinance in June, but delayed enforcement until February 1st.
