County Permits Same-Sex Marriage Licenses: Calhoun County
Probate offices in 23 of Alabama’s 67 Counties are now issuing same-sex marriages licenses. Chief Justice Roy Moore issued an order for Alabama telling the Probate judges not to issue the licenses. And that was after a federal judge struck down Alabama’s ban on gay marriage. Today, Calhoun County’s Probate Office started issuing marriage licenses between same-sex couples. Brooke and Suzette Hunter were the first same-sex couple legally married in Calhoun County. Malone and Jeffery Owen said it was worth the wait. Their ceremony will be tomorrow and then they are headed to Gatlinburg, Tennessee for a honeymoon. Calhoun County Probate Judge Alice Martin issued a statement saying: "We have considered the Order issued by Justice Moore…the Supreme Court’s decision by a seven to two majority has been the ultimate deciding factor in my decision today …"
