American Red Cross Preps for Winter Storm: Etowah County

Thursday, February 26, 2015

The Etowah-Cherokee Chapter of the American Red Cross is responding to this year's winter storms with an open shelter and with plenty of volunteers on call.  The organization is encouraging citizens to take precautions with the low temperatures and possible strong winds, icing, sleet and freezing rain that is hitting our region.  Disaster Program Specialist Josh Tanner says they have made several preparations over the last 24 hours. In preparing for winter weather the American Red Cross says to winterize your vehicle and keep the gas tank full, Insulate your home by installing storm windows or covering windows with plastic from the inside to keep cold air out, Maintain heating equipment and chimneys by having them cleaned and inspected every year, and If you will be going away during cold weather, leave the heat on in your home, set to a temperature no lower than 55°.
