Anniston, Talladega Girls Fall Short In 5A Semis

Wenonah 73, Talladega 34

Defending Class 5A state champion Wenonah (31-3) advanced to the Class 5A finals with a 73-34 win over Talladega in the girls’ semifinals at Bill Harris Arena Thursday. The 5A games were originally scheduled for the BJCC Legacy ArenaWednesday, but the winter storm that stretched through Alabama Wednesday forced the tournament to go to two sitesThursday.

All games will return to the BJCC Friday and Saturday as the 93rd AHSAA State Tournament concludes with boys and girls state finals in seven classifications.

Point guard Jayla Morrow only scored four points but handed out a tournament-high 11 assists as the Lady Dragons of Coach Emanuel Bell moved into position to capture the school’s eighth AHSAA state title with the win. Alexus Dye had 19 points and nine rebounds, Kaitlyn Rodgers added 19 points and 12 rebounds, Faith Reynolds added 12 points and Tywanna English had nine plus six assists.

Pacing Talladega (21-10), coached by Jannie Keith, was Gabreal Johnson with 12 points.

The 5A girls’ finals will be Saturday morning at 9 a.m. at the BJCC Legacy Arena.

Class 5A Girls Semifinals

Brewbaker Tech 42, Anniston 40

Coach Randy Varner’s Rams (23-7) posted a close 42-40 win over Anniston (27-9) at Bill Harris ArenaThursday night to clinch a spot in the Class 5A girls state tournament finals Saturday against Wenonah.

Michaia Fluellen had 12 points and nine rebounds, Charlisa Wellington added 10 points and 13 rebounds and Bianca Jackson chipped in 10 points and seven rebounds for Brewbaker. Wellington ansd Jackson also had four assists each.

Miajah Bullock had 15 points and Kiyana Bullock had 12 points and 14 rebounds for Coach Eddie Bullock’s Lady Bulldogs.
