Joyce Garrard Capital Murder Trial Begins
The jury in a capital murder trial in Etowah County heard its first testimony today.
Joyce Garrard is charged with the death of her 9-year-old granddaughter Savannah Hardin. Prosecutors claim Garrard forced the girl to run for hours as punishment for telling a lie about eating candy. They say the little girl collapsed and died three days later at a hospital. After hearing opening statements this morning, the girl's bus driver was the first witness the state called to testify. The trial will resume tomorrow and it's expected to continue through the end of the week.
