Testimony Continues in Capital Murder Trial
An Etowah County judge has denied a defense request for a mistrial in the case of a woman charged with running her granddaughter to death. Testimony continued today in Joyce Garrard's capital murder trial. Garrard's attorneys claimed the state failed to turn over records on Savannah Hardin's hospital treatment after she collapsed in 2012. Judge Billy Ogletree denied defense request to end the trial based on those claims. This morning, proseuctors took a medical worker off the stand before she could provide details about the girl's treatment records. Prosecutors say Garrard made the 9-year-old girl run for hours as punishment before she collapsed. Hardin died three days later at a hospital.
