Jacksonville State claimed its second-straight Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week honor on Monday, when freshman Whitney Gillespie received the honor from the league office.
The designated player from Pelham, Ala., earned the weekly honor one week after senior Sara Borders claimed JSU's first of the year. Gillespie helped the Gamecocks at the plate and in the circle in a 3-0 week that saw them defeat Georgia Tech on the road and sweep Cleveland State at home.
Gillespie went 4-for-7 (.571) at the plate, starting with a double in her only at-bat in Wednesday's 2-1 road win over the Yellow Jackets. It was the Gamecocks' third win over an Atlantic Coast Conference opponent after earlier wins over Virginia and Virginia Tech.
Over the weekend, Gillespie went 3-for-6 in a doubleheader sweep of CSU, homering three times and driving in four runs. She started with two homers in a 6-2 win in game one before belting a two-run homer in the 5-3 win in the nightcap. In that 5-3 win, she entered the circle to pitch a perfect seventh inning to grab her third save of the year.
The Gamecocks return to action Tuesday, when they face No. 25 UAB at 6 p.m. in Birmingham. The game against the Blazers will be broadcast on the Gamecock Sports Network and can be heard locally on WLJS 91.9 FM. The broadcast will also be available online at www.jsugamecocksports.com or on your mobile device through the TuneIn Radio app.
They will open OVC play this weekend with a pair of doubleheaders at University Field, starting with a 1 p.m. twinbill against UT Martin on Saturday. They will then host Southeast Missouri in a pair of games starting at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
